Abstract:
This dataset includes all snowpit observations from N-ICE2015.
Quality
Each file is named after the floe number.
File “Floe2_extra” corresponds to a short ice station, which took place on the way to Longyearbyen, after the break-up of Floe 2.
Each file includes information on:
- Depth = snow pit depth in cm
- Date = date in format DD.MM.YYYY
- Ice type = First-year ice (FYI) or second-year ice (SYI). Indicates the ice type underneath the snow pit
- Layer number = Number of layers in the snow. Number increases from top to bottom and can be used as a reference for the rest of the parameters
- Depth from bottom = Indicates the depths of the layers’ transition in cm
- Temperature = The temperature measured at each depth in Celcius
- Grain size min = The minimum grain size observed in the layer in mm
- Grain size max = The maximum grain size observed in the layer in mm
- Hardness = Hardness of the layer based on Fierz et al., 2009 (1: fist, 2: 3 fingers, 3: 1 finger, 4: pencil, 5: knife)
- Snow grain type = Snow grain type based on the classification by Sommerfeld and LaChapelle, 1970
- Density = Density of the snow layer in kg m-3
- Depth center = Depth that corresponds to the center of the cutter in cm, if available
