The core partner data centres that are integrated in NorDataNet are listed in https://www.nordatanet.no/en/node/69. In addition to this NorDataNet harvests information on relevant datasets from a number of other data centres. The data centre responsible for the data presented is usually (but not always) listed in the discovery metadata. In essence NorDataNet is an aggregating service that combines information from a number of existing data centres.
Citation of data and service
If you use data retrieved through this portal, please acknowledge our funding source:
Research Council of Norway, project number 245967/F50, Norwegian Scientific Data Network.
Always remember to cite data when used!
Citation information for individual datasets is often provided in the metadata. However, not all datasets have this information embedded in the discovery metadata. On a general basis a citation of a dataset include the same components as any other citation:
author, title,
year of publication,
publisher (for data this is often the archive where it is housed),
edition or version,
access information (a URL or persistent identifier, e.g. DOI if provided)
All partner repositories of NorDataNet support Digital Object Identifiers (DOI), but not all datasets are minted. Whether or not minted depends often on source of the data (e.g. operational data are often yet not minted). However, all data centres support persistent identifiers according to local systems. The information required to properly cite a dataset is normally provided in the discovery metadata the datasets.
Brief user guide
The Data Access Portal has information in 3 columns. An outline of the content in these columns is provided above. When first entering the search interface, all potential datasets are listed. Datasets are indicated in the map and results tabulation elements which are located in the middle column. The order of results can be modified using the "Sort by" option in the left column. On top of this column is normally relevant guidance information to user presented as collapsible elements.
If the user want to refine the search, this can be done by constraining the bounding box search. This is done in the map - the listing of datasets is automatically updated. Date constraints can be added in the left column. For these to take effect, the user has to push the button marked search. In the left column it is also possible to specific text elements to search for in the datasets. Again pushing the button marked "Search" is necessary for these to take action. Complex search patterns can be constructed using logical operators identified in the drop down menu with and phrases embedded in quotation marks. Prefixing a phrase with '-' negates the phrase (i.e. should not occur in the results). Searches are case insensitive.
Other elements indicated in the left and right columns are facet searches, i.e. these are keywords that are found in the datasets and all datasets that contain these specific keywords in the appropriate metadata elements are listed together. Further refinement can be done using full text, date or bounding box constraints. Individuals, organisations and data centres involved in generating or curating the datasets are listed in the facets in the right column. The combination of search fields (including facets) is based on a logical "AND" combination of the fields, i.e. all conditions are fulfilled for the results provided.
Researchers gathered data on annual snow layers at Siple Dome, Antarctica, using borehole optical stratigraphy. This data set contains annual layer depths and firn optical brightness. The brightness log is a record of reflectivity of the firn, and peaks in brightness are interpreted to be fine-grained high-density winter snow, as part of the wind slab depth-hoar couplet.
Data are available via FTP in ASCII text (.txt) format
The dataset contains stake positions and exposed stake heights along the EPICA Traverse route from Troll Station to “Site M” at 75 deg. S, 15 deg. E.
During the EPICA traverse in 1996-1997 along the same route in 1996-1997 a series of stakes were set out along the traverse line and precisely positioned by GPS. The stakes were re-measured during the next EPICA traverse four years later, during the 2000-2001 season. The stakes were positioned at 60 km intervals up to Site M, the drill site for a 150 metre ice core. “Strain nets” and “coffee cans” were included at two, respectively three sites. Most of the stakes were re-measured a third time during the IPY Traverse in 2007-2008.
Quality
This dataset contains the data from the 2000-2001 season:
- Raw data from the GPS receivers, in folders named by date
- Data report with precise, calculated positions and heights for all stakes (in Norwegian)
- Traverse map
- Field log (in Norwegian)
- Excerpt from the NARE field report (pp. 24-26)
- Equipment list (in Norwegian)
This dataset shows the grain size composition of seabed sediments upper part (top 10-15 cm of the seabed). Full coverage grain size data are based on analyzes of seabed samples, analysis and interpretation of digital reflektivitetsdata and interpretation of analog and digital seismic data. Regional scale 1:50 000 - 250000. The dataset covers areas of the Norwegian continental shelf and Skagerrak.
This dataset shows the distribution og the Quaternary sediments on the seabed. Based on analog reflection seismic data, seabed sampling and digital data from modern mapping with reflection seismic and multibeam sonar, the interpretation is made to describe the genesis of the submarine deposits. The dataset covers areas of the Norwegian continental shelf and Skagerrak.
Snow accumulation rates typically show high variability over short distances. This data set contains accumulation rates using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to detect isochronal layers in the firn in West Antarctica. These layers were then dated using results from ice core analyses. These data show that accumulation rates along this profile have decreased in recent decades. The radar profile extends between two ice core sites taken along one of the US-ITASE traverse routes.
This data set contains sub-annually resolved concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), snow, firn and ice from 23 sites on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS).
This data set contains atmospheric mixing ratios of hydrogen peroxide and methylhydroperoxide at 21 sites on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) were obtained from 2000 to 2003 during the US International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (US ITASE) deployments. Sample location from the WAIS region (76-90ºS / 84-124ºW) were approximately 100-300 km apart and correspond to US ITASE ice core sites. At each site, ambient air from 1 m above the snow surface was sampled between two to five days. Atmospheric hydroperoxides (ROOH) were continuously scrubbed from the sample air with a glass coil scrubber and subsequently quantified using a fluorescence detection method.
Data are available via FTP as ASCII text files (.txt).
This data set includes ice motion and topography measurements that were taken by measuring movement and altitude of poles set in the West Antarctic Ice Shelf. The data was acquired by Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements of poles. The position of the poles was measured twice; once in 2000, and again in 2002. Movement of the poles in that time show the ice motion velocity and direction.
GPS pole positions are given in latitude and longitude, and elevations are given in meters above the WGS1984 ellipsoid. The data are presented as tables in ASCII text files. Three maps of the area are included with the data tables.
