The core partner data centres that are integrated in NorDataNet are listed in https://www.nordatanet.no/en/node/69. In addition to this NorDataNet harvests information on relevant datasets from a number of other data centres. The data centre responsible for the data presented is usually (but not always) listed in the discovery metadata. In essence NorDataNet is an aggregating service that combines information from a number of existing data centres.
Citation of data and service
If you use data retrieved through this portal, please acknowledge our funding source:
Research Council of Norway, project number 245967/F50, Norwegian Scientific Data Network.
Always remember to cite data when used!
Citation information for individual datasets is often provided in the metadata. However, not all datasets have this information embedded in the discovery metadata. On a general basis a citation of a dataset include the same components as any other citation:
author, title,
year of publication,
publisher (for data this is often the archive where it is housed),
edition or version,
access information (a URL or persistent identifier, e.g. DOI if provided)
All partner repositories of NorDataNet support Digital Object Identifiers (DOI), but not all datasets are minted. Whether or not minted depends often on source of the data (e.g. operational data are often yet not minted). However, all data centres support persistent identifiers according to local systems. The information required to properly cite a dataset is normally provided in the discovery metadata the datasets.
Brief user guide
The Data Access Portal has information in 3 columns. An outline of the content in these columns is provided above. When first entering the search interface, all potential datasets are listed. Datasets are indicated in the map and results tabulation elements which are located in the middle column. The order of results can be modified using the "Sort by" option in the left column. On top of this column is normally relevant guidance information to user presented as collapsible elements.
If the user want to refine the search, this can be done by constraining the bounding box search. This is done in the map - the listing of datasets is automatically updated. Date constraints can be added in the left column. For these to take effect, the user has to push the button marked search. In the left column it is also possible to specific text elements to search for in the datasets. Again pushing the button marked "Search" is necessary for these to take action. Complex search patterns can be constructed using logical operators identified in the drop down menu with and phrases embedded in quotation marks. Prefixing a phrase with '-' negates the phrase (i.e. should not occur in the results). Searches are case insensitive.
Other elements indicated in the left and right columns are facet searches, i.e. these are keywords that are found in the datasets and all datasets that contain these specific keywords in the appropriate metadata elements are listed together. Further refinement can be done using full text, date or bounding box constraints. Individuals, organisations and data centres involved in generating or curating the datasets are listed in the facets in the right column. The combination of search fields (including facets) is based on a logical "AND" combination of the fields, i.e. all conditions are fulfilled for the results provided.

The dataset contains thermograph data from one of the Hurtigruten ships, MS Vesterålen, in 2002. Temperature at 4 m depth and ship position is logged every 5 minutes between Bergen and Kirkenes.
The survey indices by age group for bottom trawl and acoustic estimates for cod from the winter survey (January-March) in the Barents Sea are calculated as described in Mehl et al. 2016 (bottom trawl) and Mehl et al. 2018 (acoustic). Mean length and weight at age is also calculated. Updated data series are provided in the annual survey reports (e.g. Mehl et al. 2019). The series go back to 1981, but StoX estimates go back only to 1994. The survey has been a Joint Norwegian-Russian one from 2000 onwards except in the years 2006, 2007 and 2017.
The survey area is divided into eight main areas and 26 strata. In 2014, the investigated area was enlarged by three new strata in northwest, 24-26. These strata are, however, not included in the standard calculations of indices. Note also that prior to 1994, the area covered was smaller and no adjustments have been made for that. In the early period (1981-1995) there were also some gear changes, for which adjustments have been made, these changes are also described in the reports referred to.
In 1997, 1998 and 2007 only the Norwegian EEZ (NEZ) and parts of the Svalbard area (S) was covered. The indices for cod and haddock have therefore been raised to also represent the Russian EEZ (REZ) (Mehl et al. 2016, 2018).
In 2006, there was not a complete coverage in southeast due to restrictions. The observations in the partially covered strata 7 were extrapolated to the full strata, and the observations in the partially covered strata 13 were extrapolated to the same area as covered in 2005. In 2012 the coverage was incomplete in the eastern areas, and the cod and haddock swept area estimates within the covered area were raised by the “index ratio by age” observed for the same area in 2008-2011 (ICES 2012). The scaling factor (“index ratio”) for estimating adjusted total from <Total – area D’> was the average ratio by age for Total/(Total – area D’) in the years 2008-2011 (Aglen et al. 2012).
In 2017, the Norwegian vessel was not allowed to operate south of 70º 10’ N and west of 41º 00 º E, and no Russian vessel participated in the survey. Only a small part of strata 7 was covered, and strata 13, 15, 17 and 20 were not covered. The cod, haddock, Greenland halibut and beaked redfish swept area estimates and cod and haddock acoustic estimates within the covered area were raised following the same procedure as for 2012. The scaling factor for estimating adjusted total from <Total –strata 7 > was the average ratio by age for Total/(Total – (strata 7+13+15+17+20)) swept area indices in the years 2014-2016.
All these adjustments are included in the StoX projects used for the calculations.

This data set consists of continuous meteorological data, monthly climatological summaries, and upper air meteorological data for the NOAA/CMDL Pt. Barrow Observatory. Data include hourly average observations of air temperature, station pressure, and surface wind direction and speed. The data set also includes atmospheric radiation at the Barrow Observatory. Radiation data consist of hourly-averaged data for downwelling short-wave radiation, in watts per square meter. The radiation data were used to determine the snow disappearance date at Barrow on the basis of objective, radiometric measurements made over open tundra (<a href="http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/grad/snomelt.html">http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/grad/snomelt.html</a>).
These data are available from the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory, <a href="http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/dv/data/">http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/dv/data/</a>. Meteorological data are available via FTP at <a href="ftp://aftp.cmdl.noaa.gov/data/meteorology/in-situ/brw/">ftp://aftp.cmdl.noaa.gov/data/meteorology/in-situ/brw/</a>, and radiation data are available at <a href="ftp://aftp.cmdl.noaa.gov/data/radiation/baseline/brw/">ftp://aftp.cmdl.noaa.gov/data/radiation/baseline/brw/</a>.
This data set consists of micrometeorological tower data from Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands (periantarctic). Parameters include summer heat flux balance, soil heat flux, and active layer temperature. Measurements were collected by data logger every minute, between December and February of 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996. 1998, 1999, and 2000. Air temperature and active layer temperature were measured annualy in 2000, 2001, and 2002.
This data set includes subsurface radar profiles that were recorded between core sites during the November-December seasons for 1999-2002. Data were collected using an ice-penetrating radar to survey the ice sheet. Ice thickness data are available for a portion of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. This study is part of the U.S. participation in the International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (US ITASE).
This data set contains mean, median, minimum and maximum freeze and thaw depths for each year from
1901 to 2002 on the 25 km resolution Equal-Area Scalable Earth Grid (EASE-Grid) for areas north of 50
deg. Freeze and thaw depths are estimated using a variant of the Stefan solution using an edaphic factor
and freezing or thawing indices as inputs. The edaphic factor is estimated based on different land surface
types; the freezing and thawing indices are from Northern Hemisphere EASE-Grid annual freezing
and thawing indices, 1901 - 2002 (Zhang, et al. 2005).
Two ASCII files are available for each year for freeze depth and thaw depth, respectively. Each file is
approximately 25.6 MB in size. In addition, there is one 10.5 MB ASCII file defining the latitude and longitude coordinates for each grid point. The data set is available via FTP as three compressed files.
This data set contains monthly values of the total exposed land area of seasonally frozen ground and
annual values for intermittently frozen ground in the Northern Hemisphere. Seasonally frozen ground is
defined as the near-surface soil that experiences freeze for more than 15 days per year, while intermittently frozen ground experiences fewer than 15 days of freeze per year. The values were
calculated based upon the monthly mean air temperature from the 1901-2002, 0.5 deg. global land
temperatures from the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit (Mitchell and Jones, 2005) using
the technique described by Zhang, et al. (2003).
Two ASCII files are available. One file contains monthly values of seasonally frozen ground area in
square kilometers for 1901-2001. The other file contains annual values of intermittently frozen ground
area. Data are available via FTP.
