Protist taxonomy and abundance (in cells per L) from microscopy samples from the Kong Håkon VII Hav in the Southern Ocean. Samples were collected on an ecosystem cruise in March 2019. See Kauko et al. (in prep.) and Kauko et al. (2021) (https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2021.623856) for more details.
The area code in the file indicates the sampling areas (see the above mentioned papers). 2: station 53. 3: station 54. 4: Astrid Ridge. 5: 6° E transect. 6: Maud Rise. LocationID is the station/CTD cast number. See the supplementary table of Kauko et al. (in prep.) for grouping of species and other summarized information. Contact the authors for the raw data file for some more size information and other notes. See related datasets for carbon chemistry (https://doi.org/10.21334/npolar.2021.28fbddd2).
Quality
The samples (190 mL) were fixed with glutaraldehyde and 20% hexamethylenetetramine-buffered formaldehyde (final concentrations of 0.1 and 1%, respectively). Sub-samples were settled for 48 h, and analysed with a Nikon Ti-U inverted light microscope by counting in fields of view located along transects crossing the bottom of the chamber (until at least 50 cells of the dominant species were counted).
