We conducted soil survey and field sampling for detecting forest ecosystem response to climate warming/cooling processes in the past at Varrio Nature Reserve, northeastern Finland. Rock fragment ratio in the soil profiles was roughly estimated and tree ring core of Pinus sylvestris were analysed. Four soil profiles were described. These profiles showed typical podzolic features. Roch fragment ratio waried much among profiles. Round-shaped or angular-shaped stones/boulders in soil profiles were critical diagnostic features in terms of soil development process and slope conditions.
