Norwegian Polar Institute

The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) is Norway's central institution for research, environmental monitoring and mapping of the Polar Regions, and advising the government on the management of the polar environment. NPI is a directorate under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment, and employs some 180 persons in Tromsø, Svalbard and Antarctica, with an annual budget of 250 MNOK. Its main research platforms are the Sverdrup Station in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, the Troll Station in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, and the research vessel “Lance”.

The Institute's research activities are focussed on environmental management needs at both poles, relating to global climate change, long-range pollution influx, and their effects on the marine and terrestrial ecosystems. NPI carries out extensive monitoring and research programmes in the geosciences and life sciences, including biodiversity, ecotoxicology, geology, oceanography and glaciology. The institute maintains its own data holdings and is developing a data centre based on service-oriented architecture to comply with public requirements for open data access.
