The following is an extract of emails received through the ICSU CODATA mailing list.

Dear colleague,

We would like to encourage you to submit an abstract to the following session of the Fall 2019 American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco, CA (December 9-13). It will be the centennial of AGU with special events!

Data-Oriented and Self-Optimizing Architectures and Workflows for Earth, Space and Climate Science Applications (IN Session ID# 77921)

The goal of this session is to discuss innovative approaches and new ideas on data distribution platforms, architectures, and workflows themselves to support research in Earth and Space Sciences. There will also be invited speakers in this session.
Achieving research progress depends on dealing with increasing volumes of data for pre-processinganalysesvisualization and numerical modelingResearch infrastructures must accommodate those requirements transparently, using heterogeneous backends, provided by e-infrastructure services such as Clouds. Developers need to reach across infrastructure boundariestransparently, while effectively moving data processing and analysis, but not control, away from users and closer to the data. They should deliver transparent combination and optimization of workflows over heterogeneous contexts, such as pipelining HPC codes, data transformation and analytics. Innovative approaches are needed to support the scientific data life cycle in the context of large-scale data and diverse infrastructures.

Presentations are encouraged on, but are not limited to:
            • Novel research architectures;
            • Workflows and intelligent optimization;
            • HPC integration and data-driven approaches, including HPC on the Cloud;
            • Provenance;
            • Front-ends and services designed for large-scale data-oriented solutions.
We look forward to a stimulating set of talks and discussions, and hope that you will consider participating. Please note that the strict deadline for abstract submission is Wednesday, 31 July at 23:59 EDT.

Dear Colleagues,

The 2019 Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union will be held on 9–13 December 2019 in San Francisco, CA. The World Data System is co-convening the following session, and we would like to encourage your abstract submission by the deadline of Wednesday, 31 July.

Session ID: 82801
Session Title: IN003. Advancing Capabilities to Enable Current and Future Use of Earth and Space Science Data
Section/Focus Group: Earth and Space Science Informatics

Session Description:
Data centers, repositories, archives, and other data facilities and systems strive to offer trustworthy capabilities and services that enable sharing and long-term use of open data. A variety of such facilities and systems have been operating around the world, serving user communities for many scientific disciplines. Upon acquiring data from various missions, projects and/or studies and in diverse formats, data product and service developers assess, manage, curate, process, integrate, package, organize, describe, and disseminate data, to facilitate widespread and continuing data sharing and use. Providing capabilities for sharing open data fosters new studies and new data products and services. The TRUST Principles (Transparency, Responsibility, User Community, Sustainability, and Technology), certification, and policy development can contribute to system improvements as well as increased user expectations. Presentations describe approaches and opportunities to improve systems, capabilities, and services for enabling current and future uses of Earth and space science data products and services.

Primary Convener:
  • Robert Downs, Columbia University of New York, Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), Palisades NY

Conveners:

  • H. K. Ramapriyan (Rama), Science Systems and Applications, Inc. & NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD
  • Rorie Edmunds, World Data System of the International Science Council, WDS International Programme Office, Tokyo, Japan

Final Abstract Submission Deadline: 23:59 ET (UTC-4) on Wednesday, 31 July

We look forward to your contribution and participation at the AGU meeting.

Best wishes,
Rorie

Hello, all:

The 2019 Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union will be held on 9–13 December 2019 in San Francisco, CA.  My colleagues below and I are co-convening the following session, and we would like to encourage your abstract submission by the deadline of Wednesday, 31 July.

Session ID: 80615
Session Title: IN050:  What Works -- and How(!?):  Sharing Successful Approaches to Educating Research Teams on Research Data Management and Related Data Skills
Section/Focus Group: Earth and Space Science Informatics

Session Description:
The last several years have seen a significant increase in the development and re-use of Research Data Management (RDM) educational and training resources. A number of organizations and individuals have specifically  targeted researchers and their support teams in academia, government, and industry. In this session, educational and training resource creators and adaptors are invited to share their success stories in educating scientific researchers (including students) at different phases of their education or professional career.  We’d like to hear answers to the questions: What works? Do you have experience with a pedagogical approach that has proven particularly effective? Have you engaged in collaborative teaching partnerships, and if so, with whom and what has made them effective? Have you developed or used interesting hands-on activities, demonstrations, simulations, or other fun and engaging teaching tools or methods?  We welcome and encourage educators from all levels and settings to participate in this session.

Primary Convener:

  • Nancy J. Hoebelheinrich, Knowledge Motifs LLC, San Mateo, CA

Conveners:

  • Karl Benedict, Research Data Services, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM
  • Chung-Yi (Sophie) Hou, Ronin Institute, Montclair, NJ

Final Abstract Submission Deadline: 23:59 ET (UTC-4) on Wednesday, 31 July
